We have grown grain sorghum for 20 years, and the reason
we started growing the crop was because of its drought tolerance. As our
irrigation water becomes more and more depleted, it is important that we use a
crop that is sustainable.
This past season, we struggled to get the crop going
because of lack of moisture, but once it was established it could not get much
better as we received some good fall rains.

The Pioneer 84G62 has always done very well for us. On
our farm, we rotate grain sorghum and beans and have found that the sorghum
really builds up the ground for us. The crop does a nice job of holding back
the soil and helps stop our erosion problems on the hills.
This year, we planted a little later than I would like.
As far as chemicals and fertilizers, I used a low salt fertilizer at planting
but did not use any over the top insecticides. Probably should have, but the
crop still performed.

I started planting milo in 1999 when I began no-tilling.
My crop rotation is milo, soybeans, two years of wheat and then back to milo.
This seems to be a good rotation because I have never hit anything less than 80
bushels on my milo yields.
As far as marketing my grain, I am fortunate be close to
AgMark in Concordia (Kan.) where they have a train loading station and usually
pay a premium for grain sorghum.

Although my father has planted sorghum for many years, I
first planted it in 2006.
This year we had a good start. The variety we used was a
good fit for the area and we did not have any lodging problems. We also
recently purchased a 16-row planter with in-furrow technology. This afforded us
to use a starter fertilizer, which helped increase the yields.
We also received approximately 30 inches of rain at the
test area. We usually only average 16 inches or so and many of the rains came
after mid-July.

We typically plant a grain sorghum-soybean rotation,
especially on our marginal ground. On marginal ground sorghum can out yield
corn pretty easily.
Last season, we received a lot of good moisture early;
however, later in the season it turned dry. Many of the double crop beans were
hurting at one point. Fortunately, my grain sorghum is under irrigation, plus
the crop has the capability to stand some dry weather.

We did not get in to the field to plant until June, then
we had an abnormally wet season with the majority of rain starting after July.
The variety of milo we plant is a good yielder so we usually plant 100
plus acres of that variety.
Since our particular area is dry land, we like to plant
milo because of its water usage. In addition, we have a cow/calf operation so
we pasture the stalks in the fall. For grazing, milo stalks last longer than
corn.

We have been planting grain sorghum for five years and
have a soybean milo rotation. Even though we had a cool summer which turned to
extensive heat later in the season, this particular Pioneer variety performed
well in my area as well as for me.
The reason I plant grain sorghum is because it performs
better on poor ground and my inputs are cheaper than they would be if I were to
plant corn.
