NSP has worked with USDA's Ag Marketing Service for over two years to establish a sorghum checkoff program that will provide the sorghum industry with expanded research, promotion and information resources.

A checkoff proposal was published in the Federal Register for comment on November 22, 2007. When the comment period closed, 87 percent of comments received were positive and USDA proceeded to implement a checkoff program.

Collections began July 1, 2008. USDA is in charge of checkoff program oversight. USDA's sorghum program page is available here.

The United Sorghum Checkoff Program focuses on research, promotion and information while the National Sorghum Producers, a membership organization, represents sorghum farmers in legislative and regulatory matters and through educational outreach. Checkoff dollars may not be used for any legislative or regulatory activities.
