NSP is Ensuring Sorghum's Profitability
NSP is making sorghum more profitable for your operation. Since checkoff funds may not generally be used for legislative efforts, we partner with state associations and producers through voluntary membership dues and contributions. NSP does more with less staff than other larger commodity organizations. So, why should you invest in NSP membership?
- NSP worked diligently to increase the loan rate for sorghum producers in the 2002 Farm Bill. The national loan rate has increased from $1.68/bu in 2001 to $1.95 in 2004. That's a $.27 increase per bushel.
- NSP worked with USDA to correct inconsistencies with the calculation of LDPs.
- NSP successfully fought for crop insurance and Loan Deficiency Payment (LDP) programs for sorghum hay and silage; a move that means $40 to $60 an acre for many sorghum hay and silage producers.
- NSP is guarding against inequities and is on a constant watch on behalf of sorghum growers, protecting against situations that can lessen their bottom line.
- NSP takes a tough, no-nonsense stance with EPA to get urgently needed products into the waiting hands of growers throughout the sorghum belt, and continue to push EPA to enforce policies and rules in a clear, consistent and scientifically sound manner.
- NSP has used association dollars to triple federal and state research funds. NSP helped facilitate $40 million in National Science Foundation funding for genome research. This included $3.2 million for public sector sorghum biotechnology research.
- NSP knows that the best way to help U.S. sorghum producers is by listening to them. If you have concerns, suggestions or ideas, you will always find an open-door policy at NSP. Whether it's a production problem, a needed policy change or clarification, or a direct line to representation in Washington, D.C., we're a toll-free phone call or e-mail away.
- NSP is teaming up with the Southern Seed Associaton for the 2007 joint conference in San Ana Pueblo, N.M. at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa next January 14-16. Attendees will learn what's new in the industries and compare notes with other producers, agribusiness representatives and sorghum researchers. Winners of the Grain Sorghum Yield and Management Conest are honored during the conference awards banuqet.
