This year’s National Sorghum Foundation’s Sorghum Challenge Award has been granted to Ms. Laura Zimmerer of College Station, Texas.  Zimmerer, a senior food science and technology major at Texas A&M University, was raised on a farm in North Texas, where her family farms sorghum along with other grain crops.  She will be granted a $750 scholarship for the 2011 school year and has been granted the opportunity to accompany the National Sorghum Producers and state association presidents to Washington, D.C., on a trip to visit our legislative representatives.

The National Sorghum Foundation has established a new scholarship in the name of Darrel Rosenow in the amount of $500. The Darrell Rosenow Memorial Scholarship has been created to honor the life of its namesake, a pioneer in sorghum breeding. Rosenow spent over 40 years as a sorghum plant breeder for the Texas A&M Experiment Station and was instrumental in establishing the Sorghum Conservation Program. He served as a teacher and mentor to many aspiring sorghum students from across the globe.
This year’s recipient is Elizabeth Elmore of Wamego, Kan. Elmore is a junior agronomy major at Kansas State University. After graduation, she plans on attending graduate school and expanding her knowledge in agronomy, more specifically, drought tolerance breeding and cropping system dynamics.
